Is Aluminum in Deodorant Bad For You?

As you are probably well aware of by now, I recently became pretty obsessed with learning all about the things I am not only eating but also putting onto my body. Did you know that your body absorbs SIXTY PERCENT of the products you put on? That’s right, all your face washes, deodorants, lotions, shampoos, conditioners, nail polishes, make up and more, all slowly but surely absorb into our pores and ultimately into our blood system. Now I know what you’re thinking, ok you’re going too far but, if we can easily avoid certain toxic products, why wouldn’t we? Not only are there tons of alternative options, I am doing all the work for you so all you have to do is switch.

Check your products for these harmful ingredients!

So, is aluminum in deodorant bad for you? I have always heard that aluminum was bad for you so I set out to research it a bit more. I had a boyfriend once who refused to wear deodorant, at the time I thought he was smelly and crazy, and while he was both, now I at least understand his logic behind this and this only. So if this interests you as it does me, here are the reasons why aluminum is very bad for you as well as one new deodorant I came across that is aluminum free that I really like and more importantly that actually works.

What is aluminum? Aluminum is a light silvery-gray metal used to make things like soda cans, foil, baseball bats, boats, planes etc..

Why is it in deodorant? Aluminum temporarily plugs the sweat ducts and prevents you from sweating.

What deodorants have aluminum? Pretty much every single brand unless it’s from a health store and says “aluminum free”. I checked out my Dove deodorant and sure enough, the main ingredient was Aluminum Zirconium.

Why is aluminum bad? Aluminum is absorbed into the skin, particularly when the skin is nicked during shaving. Studies claim that the aluminum may then interact with your DNA and lead to cancerous changes in cells, or interfere with the action of the female hormone estrogen, which is known to influence the growth of breast cancer cells.

What do experts say? According to Ted S. Gansler, the director of medical content for the American Cancer Society, the claims don’t hold up to scrutiny. “There is no convincing evidence that antiperspirant or deodorant use increases cancer risk.” Keep in mind though, many studies did detect chemicals from antiperspirants in breast tissue, but as with most illnesses it’s hard to prove that those chemicals had any effect on breast cancer risk. That’s nice and all Ted, but I personally know several people who have had breast cancer and the cancers were tested positive for certain toxic beauty product ingredients.

There are also ties between aluminum and Alzheimer’s Disease. Back in the 1960s, a few studies found high levels of aluminum in the brains of people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

I have read many articles on both sides of this debate, you will find many that say there is no relation to aluminum and any illnesses what-so-ever but just remember, our own government also tells us eating genetically modified foods is harmless too? While we may never know if aluminum is causing these deadly diseases, I choose to avoid it all together just to feel safe. Sure you use a tiny amount of deodorant each day, and sure the chances of you cutting yourself and it absorbing into your blood are small but over the course of a lifetime, these things add up and I personally choose to not put it in or on my body.

Solution? Buy a deodorant without aluminum. This was tricky as aluminum is what stops you from sweating however, I finally found a good one that I really like. Before finding this one I was losing hope and considering using my aluminum one simply because I could not find one that worked. Great news though, this deodorant by Nature’s Gate is awesome, Propylene-Glycol/paraben/aluminum free and works well!

I got this at Jimbo’s but it is also available to purchase directly from their website here. I got the lavender and aloe which smells exactly like lavender. I think I will try the Mandarin Orange one next as it smelled a bit more fruity which I like. Other than that, it kept me from smelling gross and was not sticky like Tom’s. I also tried the Jason’s brand and did not like it at all, so terrible, it actually made me smell worse. So anyway, if you want to try out a safe, new deodorant, this is a great one to try out.
