Ever since I was little I loveddd Groundhog Day. I don’t know why… so weird, I guess I think groundhogs are cute. I remember my Dad would teach my sister and I how to spell his name, Punxsutawney Phil, and every year we’d run to the newspaper to see if he saw his shadow or not. Anyway for those of you who have better things to do than follow groundhogs, I thought I would let you know that today he saw his shadow which means 6 more weeks of Winter!
In case you are not familiar with the tradition of Groundhog day, here is a bit of info about it. Every Feb. 2 thousands of people gather in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to see if a groundhog named Phil sees his shadow during a ceremonial event.
According to this weird German tradition, if the hibernating groundhog sees his shadow, Winter will last six more weeks. If not, Spring comes early. But many people wonder, how reliable is Punxsutawney Phil?
Given 2010′s brutal Winter sweeping the nation’s middle and Eastern regions, it might be safe to say that this Winter might be on the long side, buttt then again, Punxsutawney Phil’s guesses over the past 15 years have been about as reliable as a coin toss.
Either way hes cute and it’s a fun tradition to follow. Happy Groundhog Day!
