I guess it’s a rough month for LT and I both… the San Diego Chargers finally announced today that their nine year long relationship with LT has officially come to an end. While this comes as no surprise to any up to date Charger fan, it’s still is a sad day having the release become official. I just mentioned a few weeks ago that LT would be leaving, I can’t believe the day has come!
Some say LaDainian Tomlinson’s career was slowing down because of his injuries as well as age but I think it was a combination of a few things. Sure his injuries and age play into it but there were definitely other issues going on with the coaches and players. This cut has been expected for some time, and I guess today was the big day. Lt had a meeting today with Chargers president Dean Spanos, in which he broke the news.
“I told him that in the 26 years that I’ve been in this business, it was probably the hardest thing I’ve had to do,” Spanos told The Associated Press. “I’m not close to a lot of the players, but there’s a handful that I’ve been close with, and he’s probably the closest. It was really difficult to tell him. But out of respect, I wanted to tell him earlier rather than later.” Spanos said Tomlinson “was very, very gracious and very respectful” during their meeting. “He had his typical smile. He was just as good as could be, as respectful as could be. Just really, like he is, first class.”
Tomlinson was due a $2 million roster bonus in early March, which all but guaranteed he would be cut loose, as well as a $5 million salary for 2010. He still had two years left on his contract, which was reworked last offseason.
Sad day for Charger fans all over, we loved LT and always will! He was a dedicated, loyal, hard working Charger and will definitely be remembered by San Diegans for becoming one of the NFL’s greatest running backs while on SD turf. I can’t wait to see where he ends up and will for sure become a fan of wherever he goes.
