Being a girl I feel like I am on a never ending diet… Eat this, don’t eat that… Ehh well, not really considering my weekends consist of champagne and pizza, however I do find myself watching what I eat once and a while and recently came across a list of some foods many people eat thinking they are healthy, when in reality they are anything but. Some of these foods could surprise you.

1. Sushi Rolls. Sure the veggies and seaweed wrap are low calorie, but a lot of the favorite rolls are smothered with nasty cream cheese or mayo (You know… that spicy sauce that sneaks it’s way in) Also, the seafood inside may be tempura battered aka fried greasy mess. Thanks to the above listed items, a standard sushi roll can clock in at 500 to 600 calories. Plus, soy sauce is packed with sodium, it won’t make you gain weight, but it will cause you to retain water, aka puffy mess with temporarily too tight of jeans.

Sushi tip? Play it safe like I do. Brown rice and veggies only. Avocado, asparagus, carrots, YUM!

2. Dried Fruit. Per cup, dried fruit has 5-8 times more calories than fresh fruit simply because it has been dehydrated and is much denser. Fresh grapes, for example, have 60 calories per cup, while raisins have 460. And many dried fruit brands add TONS of sugar, bumping up the calorie count even more. So healthy tip? Skip the dried and go for the real deal.

3. Rice Cakes. Sure these light snacks are fat free and low in calories, but they’re also completely lacking in fiber or protein (ingredients that experts say actually curb hunger.) That means scarfing down two or three of em won’t do anything but add more calories to your daily intake which leaves you craving something with substance. And avoid the flavored ones too, they don’t satisfy you more and they tend to have lots of sugar or sodium. Who eats rice cakes anyway, to me it’s like eating air with calories. Yuck.

4. Juice. One 16-ounce bottle of OJ or apple juice has 55 grams of carbohydrates, the equivalent of five slices of bread! EEEEK! And most of that is duh, sugar — a whopping 12 spoonfuls of it.

5. Tofu. Order tofu at a restaurant and you’ll most likely get is a plateful of sodium, calories, saturated fat, and even sugar. Tofu itself isn’t the issue, the problem is that it’s so bland, it’s often served smothered in rich sauces then deep-fried to give it flavor and texture, making it a diet disaster!

And there you have it, 5 “healthy foods” to avoid eating! Skip out on these items unless you’re into excessive calories and tighter jeans, then hey… go for it ;)

When dining at Asian restaurants, I specify “soft tofu” for dishes made with tofu. This means it is steamed rather then fried before tossing with whatever dish you’ve ordered. Much healthier. Additionally, sometimes the tofu is sauteed, which technically is fried since it’s cooked in (less) oil but it is not deep fried.
    Tofu’d for thought.
