Usually when I get my hair done, it is a disaster. It turns orange, it’s not dark enough, it’s spotted etc. So a while ago I did it myself and it turned out great! Now I will do it myself in between appointments and it costs me $7.00. Hahaha it really is the reason I never want to be blonde again, so cheap! Hair dye @ the store costs $3.99 plus developer and gloves you end up spending like $7.00.

WARNING: This will only work if you have solid colored hair, DO NOT try this if you have damaged hair, aren’t good with at home projects, think you might mess up etc. This is only for people who are good at doing things themselves, with similar colored hair already.

What you need to dye your own hair:

All supplies are from a beauty supply store, no pre-made dye kits.

  1. Rubber gloves.
  2. A comb. Not one you normally use, it will get stained.
  3. Crappy clothes . Don’t dye your hair without having as much of your skin covered as possible. It will stain your skin and clothes!
  4. An old towel, for wiping gunk off your forehead, neck, and ears.
  5. DYE. Usually I get mine from Sally’s Beauty Supplies. Color: I use the brand Wella: and the color is 3N–The staff there can help you select the color that works best for you.
  6. Developer: You want a lower volume when you go dark. 10 Volume is best

The dye box will tell you how to mix the color and developer but basically its 1 part dye, 2 parts developer. I use the entire Wella dye bottle, so I dump that out into a plastic bowl and then just fill it up twice with developer. Mix the two together and your dye is done!

I use a plastic bottle like the at home kits give you, and gloves. Give it a good shake and go!

TIP: Start with your roots first, I use a comb and comb through my entire head and put dye on the root first (takes longer to dye, ends are drier and absorb color FAST) Once you do all your roots, then move on to the rest of your head.

Let it sit at least 45 min and then wash it out. You’re done! Super easy :)

A great Beauty Supply warehouse (if you don’t mind entering the hood) is on College & University called Beauty Supply Warehouse, how unique. They have everything possible you need for your hair. Dye, developer, gloves, brushes, weaves etc. But when I say hood, I mean hood. I went there the other day, everyone stares at me aww is she lost? There was this crazyyy old black lady screaming at the little Vietnamese cashier to GIT off tha daym phone an help her she aint tryin to wait! Everyone was in shock, even her old husband was like I can’t take you no where. Keep in mind she was bra and tooth less, so ya be prepared.

But, there you have it, final product, my shiny, beautiful dark hair ;P

i dont have lots of reasons to get “beauty supplies”, but i really like Ulta in La Jolla. Its a huge store, with decent prices, and they carry some stuff that i cant find ANYWHERE else in san diego. like Blue Lizzard sun screen, and Amazing Maui Babe Browning Lotion. plus, its in La Jolla, and not the hood. =)
